2. Is Bairabi Mizoram’s Only Railway Station?
The Old Fact Is No Longer Correct
Bairabi was once Mizoram’s only operational railway station. Many old textbooks, websites and travel pages still repeat that statement.
The situation changed after the completion of the Bairabi–Sairang railway line. The extension created four new stations at Hortoki, Kawnpui, Mualkhang and Sairang.
Sairang lies near Aizawl and now functions as the principal passenger rail gateway for the state capital.
Current fact: Mizoram has stations at Bairabi, Hortoki, Kawnpui, Mualkhang and Sairang.
3. History of Railway Connectivity to Bairabi
Metre Gauge to Broad Gauge
The claim that Bairabi station was built by the British Indian Railway in 1899 is not supported by the latest official Government account of Mizoram’s railway development.
A Ministry of Railways factsheet states that Mizoram’s railway journey began with Bairabi as a metre-gauge station near the Assam border in the late 1980s.
The Katakhal–Bairabi metre-gauge route was later taken up for conversion to broad gauge. The 83.55-kilometre Katakhal–Bairabi Gauge Conversion Project was completed in 2016.
The broad-gauge upgrade improved the movement of passengers, food grains, construction materials and other freight into Mizoram.

Northeast Frontier Railway
Bairabi Railway Station is under the Northeast Frontier Railway, commonly abbreviated as NFR.
The station and the Bairabi–Sairang section fall under the administrative jurisdiction of the Lumding Division of Northeast Frontier Railway.

5. Bairabi–Sairang New Railway Line
Rail Connectivity Reached the Aizawl Region
The 51.38-kilometre Bairabi–Sairang broad-gauge line was inaugurated on September 13, 2025. The project connected the Aizawl region directly with India’s national railway network.
The line was built through difficult hilly terrain at a cost of more than ₹8,070 crore. The latest official Railway Ministry year-end account lists 45 tunnels, 55 major bridges and 88 minor bridges.
The route includes four new stations: Hortoki, Kawnpui, Mualkhang and Sairang.

Major Services Launched from Sairang
When the Bairabi–Sairang line was inaugurated, three important passenger services were introduced from Sairang:
The old claim that Bairabi directly connects Mizoram with Vijayawada and “Congress Nagar” in Hyderabad is not supported by the official services introduced with the new line. Passengers can reach many other cities through connecting trains, but that is different from a direct scheduled service.
8. Freight and Economic Importance
A Gateway for Goods and Local Products
Bairabi historically functioned as an important freight gateway for Mizoram. Food grains, cement, construction materials and other essential commodities entered the state through the railhead.
With the extension to Sairang, freight and parcel operations have moved closer to Aizawl. The first freight movement on the new section carried cement, while later operations included automobiles and food grains.
Rail connectivity can reduce transport costs and support local producers of bamboo, flowers, horticultural goods and other products by improving access to national markets.

Transport Gateway, Not an India–Myanmar Border Station
Bairabi should primarily be described as a railway and commercial gateway in northern Mizoram. It is not located close to the India–Myanmar border.
The broader Bairabi–Sairang railway corridor can support tourism by making the Aizawl region and Mizoram’s hill landscapes more accessible to visitors.
The airport serving Aizawl and much of Mizoram is Lengpui Airport. Road travel is required between the airport and railway stations.

Railways Beyond Sairang
Railway planning in Mizoram extends beyond Sairang. Government railway documents have referred to a proposed or developing corridor towards Hbicchhuah in southern Mizoram.
Such an extension could improve connectivity towards the southern border region and support future links with trade routes connected to Myanmar and the Kaladan transport network.
Students should distinguish this future southern expansion from Bairabi’s actual location near the Assam border.
