1. History and Development of Train 18

Train 18 was designed and manufactured by the Integral Coach Factory, commonly known as ICF, in Chennai. It represented a transition from conventional locomotive-hauled premium trains to a modern electric multiple-unit trainset.

The prototype was rolled out in October 2018. The name Train 18 referred to the year in which the first trainset was developed. It was later given the official name Vande Bharat Express.

According to the Ministry of Railways, Vande Bharat trainsets manufactured at ICF have around 90% localisation. This means that a large proportion of the design, manufacturing, components and systems is sourced or developed within India.

India’s first regular Vande Bharat Sleeper service began operation on the Howrah–Kamakhya route with effect from January 22, 2026.
