2. GRSE Receives Navratna Status
A Major CPSE Milestone
The Department of Public Enterprises approved Navratna status for GRSE through an Office Memorandum dated June 19, 2026.
The elevation recognised GRSE’s consistent financial and physical performance, operational efficiency and strategic contribution to India’s defence manufacturing ecosystem.
Before becoming a Navratna, GRSE had received Miniratna Category-I status in 2006. It was re-categorised as a Schedule A CPSE in 2024, an important requirement in its progression towards Navratna status.

3. What Does Navratna Status Mean?
Greater Autonomy with Accountability
Navratna is a special classification granted to strong and well-performing Central Public Sector Enterprises. It gives the company’s Board greater financial and managerial powers, subject to Government guidelines and corporate governance conditions.
Navratna status does not mean that GRSE becomes a private company. It remains a Central Public Sector Enterprise and a Government-controlled defence undertaking.

6. First Indigenous Warship – INS Ajay
A Landmark in Independent India’s Shipbuilding
In 1961, GRSE delivered the Seaward Defence Boat INS Ajay to the Indian Navy.
GRSE describes INS Ajay as the first indigenous warship built by a shipyard of independent India. The delivery took place only about a year after the Government takeover of the shipyard.
The milestone demonstrated India’s early effort to reduce dependence on imported naval platforms and develop domestic shipbuilding capability.

7. First Indian Export Warship – CGS Barracuda
India’s Warship Export Milestone
In 2014, GRSE delivered CGS Barracuda, an Offshore Patrol Vessel, to the Government of Mauritius.
The vessel is recognised by GRSE as the first warship exported by India. It became an important symbol of India’s growing defence-export capability.
GRSE later exported the Fast Patrol Vessel SCG PS Zoroaster to Seychelles and the passenger-cum-cargo ferry MV Ma Lisha to Guyana.

Largest Number Delivered by an Indian Shipyard
The company’s Navratna announcement stated that GRSE had delivered more than 800 marine platforms, including 118 warships for the Indian Navy, Indian Coast Guard and friendly foreign nations.
Of these 118 warships, 80 had been inducted into the Indian Navy. GRSE describes this as the highest number of warships delivered by any Indian shipyard.
The 100th warship delivered by GRSE was Landing Craft Utility L-56, handed over to the Indian Navy on March 30, 2019.
