India’s First Sindoor Village: Ramasi Village in Bihar
Learn about Ramasi, India’s first official Sindoor Village, the Bixa orellana crop, natural annatto colour, women-led enterprises, Unnat Bharat Abhiyan and important static GK for competitive examinations.
The project aims to make Ramasi a model village for the cultivation, conservation, processing and marketing of the Sindoor plant, scientifically known as Bixa orellana. Its seeds contain natural red-orange pigments commonly known as annatto.
Bihar Agricultural University plans to provide farmers with quality planting material, scientific cultivation methods, technical training, processing technologies and market support. The larger objective is to convert an agricultural crop into a sustainable source of employment and income.
Special attention is being given to women farmers and rural entrepreneurship. Women’s groups can participate in nursery development, cultivation, seed collection, primary processing, packaging and marketing of natural-colour products.
The programme is also an example of crop-based village specialisation. Instead of promoting only raw agricultural production, it combines farming with processing, branding, entrepreneurship and direct market linkage.
