Bharat GI Initiative 2026 – GI Tag India | DPIIT, MSME, ONDC, GeM, Andhra Pradesh GI Products & 20 MCQs
Bharat GI Initiative 2026 has become an important current-affairs topic because it connects a fresh Government of India development with one of the most repeatedly asked areas of Static GK — Geographical Indications (GI Tags).
On 11 August 2026, the Press Information Bureau announced a collaboration between the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) and the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) to accelerate the commercialisation and global market access of India's GI products.
The partnership aims to bring GI collectives and authorised users onto ONDC and GeM under a dedicated “Bharat GI” banner, integrate the One District One Product (ODOP) ecosystem and promote GI products through national and international exhibitions and buyer-seller meets.
One current-affairs event can generate questions on: DPIIT, MSME, GI Act 1999, Chennai GI Registry, TRIPS, WTO, GI validity, Darjeeling Tea, ONDC, GeM, ODOP and State-specific GI products.

A Geographical Indication (GI) identifies a good as originating from a particular geographical area where a specific quality, reputation or other characteristic of the good is essentially attributable to its geographical origin.
GI = Product + Particular Place + Special Quality/Reputation linked to that Place
Examples include Darjeeling Tea, Tirupathi Laddu, Banarasi Saree, Kashmir Saffron, Guntur Sannam Chilli and Kondapalli Bommallu.

The Register of Geographical Indications is divided into two important parts.

A = Actual GI
B = Beneficiary / Authorised User
7. Who Can Apply for a GI Registration?
An association of persons or producers, organisation or authority established by or under law that represents the interests of producers of the concerned goods can seek GI registration.
GI protection therefore has a collective geographical character. It is fundamentally different from an ordinary private brand owned solely because one company created a name.

- The GI renewal fee was reduced from ₹3,000 to ₹500.
GI renewal fee after the 2025 changes = ₹500.
11. What is ONDC?
ONDC stands for Open Network for Digital Commerce.
It aims to enable an open digital-commerce ecosystem in which buyers, sellers and service providers can interact through interoperable network participants rather than depending entirely upon one closed e-commerce platform.

ODOP and GI are related but they are not identical. ODOP is a development and product-promotion approach, whereas a GI is a legally protected intellectual-property indication linked to geographical origin and product characteristics.
15. Why Are GI Tags Important?

- Help prevent misleading use and imitation.
