Why is National Handloom Day Celebrated on 7 August?
The date 7 August has an important connection with India's freedom struggle. The Swadeshi Movement was formally proclaimed on 7 August 1905 at a major meeting held at the Calcutta Town Hall.
The movement encouraged Indians to reject foreign-made goods and support indigenous goods, domestic industries and Indian production. Indian textiles and weaving consequently became powerful symbols of economic self-reliance and nationalism.
