Today in History on September 23: Important Events, Current Affairs, GK and MCQs
September 23 is an excellent date for competitive-examination revision because it connects astronomy, Indian literature, world geography, human rights, traditional medicine, public health, water management and digital technology.
One of the greatest achievements in the history of astronomy occurred on the night of September 23–24, 1846, when astronomer Johann Gottfried Galle at the Berlin Observatory identified the planet Neptune.
Its discovery was extraordinary because astronomers had predicted the planet's location mathematically after observing unexplained irregularities in the orbit of Uranus. French mathematician Urbain Le Verrier and British mathematician John Couch Adams independently calculated the approximate position of the unknown planet.
For Indian students, September 23 is also the birth anniversary of Rashtrakavi Ramdhari Singh Dinkar, one of the most influential Hindi poets of modern India. Dinkar was born on September 23, 1908 at Simaria in present-day Begusarai district, Bihar.
September 23 is also celebrated as Saudi National Day. It commemorates the proclamation of the unified Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in 1932 under King Abdulaziz.
The United Nations observes September 23 as the International Day of Sign Languages. The observance promotes recognition of sign languages as fully fledged natural languages and highlights their importance to the human rights, education and cultural identity of deaf people.
India is also observing the 11th Ayurveda Day on September 23, 2026 under the theme “Ayurveda for a Healthier Tomorrow.”
The date has another major Indian public-health connection: Ayushman Bharat – Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana was launched on September 23, 2018 at Ranchi, Jharkhand, making September 23, 2026 its eighth anniversary.
