National Voters’ Day explained with ECI foundation facts, Article 324, EPIC, SVEEP and clickable MCQs.
Fact-checked: 19 July 2026
Introduction and Background
National Voters’ Day is observed across India on 25 January. The Election Commission of India introduced the observance in 2011 to encourage newly eligible citizens to enrol, participate in elections and understand the value of their vote. The date was chosen because the Election Commission was established on 25 January 1950.
The Election Commission of India is a constitutional authority. Article 324 vests in it the superintendence, direction and control of elections to Parliament, state legislatures and the offices of President and Vice-President. The Elector Photo Identity Card is commonly known as EPIC, while SVEEP is the ECI’s voter education and electoral participation programme.
Competitive examinations may test the date, starting year, constitutional article, ECI foundation, EPIC expansion and the voting age. The Constitution (Sixty-first Amendment) Act, 1988 reduced the voting age for Lok Sabha and Assembly elections from 21 to 18 years.
Exam strategy: First learn the date and central personality or institution. Next connect the day with one constitutional article, treaty, organisation, headquarters, discovery or historical event. Finally, revise the “Do Not Confuse” box because examinations often place two similar observances in the same question. This method converts a simple date into a complete static-GK unit for APPSC, TSPSC, UPSC, SSC, Railway, Banking and Police examinations.
