August 8 in Indian History
Quit India Resolution and Gandhi’s “Do or Die” Call
On August 8, 1942, the All India Congress Committee (AICC) adopted the Quit India Resolution at its Bombay session. The meeting was held at Gowalia Tank Maidan, which is now known as August Kranti Maidan.
Mahatma Gandhi addressed the gathering and gave the famous mantra “Do or Die”. The movement demanded the immediate end of British rule in India. The failure of the Cripps Mission earlier in 1942 was one of the important political developments leading to the movement.
In the early hours of August 9, 1942, Gandhi and other senior Congress leaders were arrested. With much of the central leadership imprisoned, protests and resistance spread across different parts of India.
Why the Quit India Movement Matters
The Quit India Movement represented a decisive demand for the complete withdrawal of British authority from India during the Second World War. It mobilised students, workers, peasants, political activists and underground networks across the country.
Government records relating to the movement highlight figures such as Aruna Asaf Ali, Ram Manohar Lohia, Jayaprakash Narayan, J. B. Kripalani and Usha Mehta. Usha Mehta became especially associated with an underground radio broadcast that helped circulate nationalist messages during the repression.

It proposed forms of civil resistance, including defiance of prohibitory orders, boycott activities, student participation, non-payment of certain taxes and disruption of colonial communications.
